Burning Barrels

The 5th November, Bonfire night (or Guy Fawkes night as we used to call it when I was a kid),  came and went last week with a return to usual pre-Covid activities - including the resumption of the ancient Burning Barrels tradition in Ottery St Mary.

Filmmaker Danny Cooke created this beautiful short film for which I wrote this poem. It was good to see it selected by Dave Bonta for his Moving Poems website:

I’ve came by chance on the Ottery St Mary’ poetic/film tribute defining a ceremony and ‘dark grieving of the year..’ Dragons (of the mind) observed in these revived pagan acts of music and or noise we perform at Weald & Downland open air museum or the Butser Farm. The traditional pagan winter light festivals and ..later merrier ones take us into New year too..you have refined to an essence; an ethnic joy!
